A little-known fact: long before I started Sarah's Vegan Kitchen, I had a beauty channel on YouTube! I was a makeup-crazed college student and borderline cosmetics and skincare hoarder. I also had a much more...shall we say, eclectic (?) aesthetic sense at the time, and it was not unlike me to wear rainbow eyeshadow or a full-on smokey eye on a casual day.
Around the time I went vegan, I felt naturally drawn to a more health-conscious, minimalistic lifestyle. I pared down my makeup collection to just essentials, and gradually replaced my old favorite products with more natural, non-toxic and cruelty-free options. Although my daily makeup routine is much more low-maintenance these days, I still get just as excited about getting dolled up and trying out new vegan makeup. Here are my thoughts on the products I've tried so far.
Recently I had the great pleasure of trying out a few products by 100% Pure! They're a cruelty-free brand that creates makeup free of synthetic colors, preservatives and fragrances; it's naturally-pigmented with fruit. A majority of their catalog is vegan, and they're moving towards a fully-vegan product line.
I had heard great things about 100% Pure from one of my favorite bloggers in the cruelty-free and natural beauty space: Tashina Combs of Logical Harmony. I selected a few products that she had raved about, including the Maracuja Oil Mascara, the Pretty Naked II Palette, and the BB Cream. I used these to achieve the daytime look pictured above, and tied the look together with a coat of their Pomegranate Oil Anti- Aging lipstick.
Maracuja Mascara: Black Tea
This Maracuja Oil Mascara is my favorite of all the products I've tried from 100% Pure! It's a true midnight-black color and derives its pigment from black tea, cacao and coffee beans. I've tried my fair share of more natural mascaras that did almost nothing for my lashes, but this formula is volumizing and the brush shape is optimized to coat the lashes while maintaining separation. The mascara wears beautifully throughout the day; it doesn't flake or transfer at the corner of my eyes like other mascaras I've tried in the past. I'm eager to try out some of their colored mascaras! They have a deep purple and navy that intrigue me.
Years ago I underwent two courses of Accutane to eliminate my severe cystic acne. It didn't keep my skin clear, unfortunately, but my skin went from oily to quite dry and has stayed that way since. I've struggled to find face products that provide decent coverage without looking cakey on my skin type. This BB Cream has been a godsend for me! It offers buildable coverage and a natural dewy finish. You can use a damp beauty sponge for a sheer application, or buff it in with a dense brush to achieve medium to full coverage. One layer helps to even out my acne scars and the redness around my nose. It has fantastic staying power, even though I don't set it with a powder.
Fruit Pigmented Pretty Naked II Palette
In college, a very makeup-crazed younger version of myself spent way too much money on eyeshadow palettes at Sephora. Since going vegan, I've striven to minimize my makeup collection and gradually replace my old products with cruelty-free alternatives. This Pretty Naked II palette is perfect! It includes 3 eyeshadows, a blush and a gorgeous highlight color, all of which are highly-pigmented, velvety and easily blendable. I've used them with and without an eyeshadow primer and they hold up well both ways. The blush color, "Afterglow," is a gorgeous, universally-flattering peach-pink that imparts a natural flush to the cheeks, and the highlight color, "Illume," is absolutely to die for! It has a pearlescent subtly pink shimmer that looks beautiful on the cheekbone, or as a browbone or inner-corner highlight.
Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Oil Anti Aging Lipstick: Peony
It has proven somewhat of a challenge to find lip products that don't exaggerate the dryness of my lips! These Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Oil lipsticks contain pomegranate oil and shea butter and are wonderfully moisturizing. I chose the color "Peony," described as a "true, pale pink" on the 100% Pure site. It offers a sheer wash of color and a nice glossy finish that make your lips look plump and full without settling in lines. And of course I love that it's free of synthetic chemicals, dyes, preservatives and toxins (like all of 100% Pure's products), so I feel safe applying it to my lips! I'm eager to try out a few more colors in the coming months.
