Vegan French Onion Dip

Of the three dips I made this year in preparation for the Super Bowl, this is my favorite! It's the perfect blend of sweet and savory, and it's utterly addictive on warm bread or crackers. And it's totally okay to go to town on this dip, because it's made of good-for-you ingredients.

The key to this recipe is to practice patience while caramelizing your onions. Sauté them the full 25-30 minutes to ensure that they're deep brown, ultra-sweet and almost falling apart. Your finished caramelized onions will almost melt in your mouth!

Adding a splash of water every few minutes or so will help the onions soften and ensure they won't burn onto the pan. If you have a good nonstick pan, you may not need to use oil; otherwise, use a teaspoon or so at the beginning.

French Onion Dip

ingredients:

  • 1 recipe cultured sour cream or 1 (12 oz) container vegan sour cream, such as Tofutti
  • 2 sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons minced chives
  • salt and pepper, to taste

instructions:

  1. Sautée sliced onion on medium heat for 25-30 minutes until deep brown and caramelized. Stir often, adding a splash of water as needed to deglaze the pan and keep onions from sticking.
  2. Stir caramelized onions and remaining ingredients into sour cream. Serve warm or chilled with fresh vegetables, bread or chips.
